Apple will stop relying on ChatGPT and make Siri a “fully-fledged” AI chatbot this year, says reliable Apple insider

Reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, a reliable source of Apple news, suggest Apple is ready to ditch ChatGPT as its AI model for Siri with Apple Intelligence. Instead, the Apple personal assistant is to become a capable AI chatbot of its own, offering a serious competitor built straight into some of the most popular devices in the world. Apple originally announced ChatGPT integration back in 2024, and it now seems ready to make the leap to its own AI model.
Introduced in iOS 18, Apple Intelligence has had a large marketing push for the latest iPhones (and other Apple devices), but its initial implementation left more to be desired. Previously announced features were delayed, and a viral interview with The Wall Street Journal’s Joanna Stern gave Apple the chance to explain what had ‘gone wrong’ with Siri.
Campos chatbot joins Siri as part of Apple Intelligence
The Bloomberg report claims the revamped Siri will transform the assistant into a chatbot currently codenamed Campos, due to be released in Fall 2026. Apple routinely releases its new iPhones (and with them, the latest version of iOS) in September each year, so it would make sense for this update to arrive around that time.

This suggests the Siri branding will be dropped altogether, though we’ll have to wait and see how this develops, especially given just how recognizable Siri is. In any case, Siri currently fails to natively provide the much more interactive back-and-forth conversation you’ll find in AI model-driven chatbots such as ChatGPT, Gemini, or Grok. Campos aims to change that.
After news broke of the Apple chatbot, shares for the tech giant climbed as much as 1.7%. Google is said to be providing the underlying technology for Campos as Apple strays away from using OpenAI’s ChatGPT as the main provider of its AI integration.
The introduction of Campos into the Apple Intelligence feature set means it will be available on popular devices such as the iPhone, iPad, and Mac via their respective operating systems – iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. Last year, Apple unified all these operating system names to reflect the current year (all three are now in version 26).
