It’s real – Bethesda has just announced the remake of many people’s favorite The Elder Scrolls title. A remake for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was announced today, on April 22nd, in a rather mysterious livestream that was simply titled “All will be revealed…”. Well, the huge announcement has gotten fans talking, though we already knew this was coming thanks to some early in-game screenshots leaked online last week.
While fans celebrate the announcement, there is a slight worry for a fan-made Oblivion remake mod we’ve been following for some time now. We’re talking about Skyblivion, a reimagining of Oblivion (as the name suggests) in the Skyrim engine due for release later this year. In contrast, the official remaster is built in Unreal Engine 5.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered announced
Bethesda, in its announcement of the Oblivion remaster, says that fans can look forward to a “tremendous visual update” while retaining some of the charm of the original. The company, in partnership with Virtuous, wishes to bring a version of Oblivion that “looks and feels incredible” with the benefit of including all DLC and extras as standard.
Aside from the visuals, the gameplay has also been modernized with improved UI, UX, and audio, with “a best of both worlds” levelling system which serves as a hybrid between Skyrim and Oblivion. The game also adds sprinting, which is something the original lacked.
There are also new lines of dialogue for each race, keeping in “all of the quirkier dialogue” you may have come to know and love. Overall, the remaster looks like a faithful rendition of Oblivion, though we can’t help but feel that it will undermine the fan-made reimagining from the developers working on Skyblivion.
