Bungie is putting a lot of effort into making Marathon one of the best extraction shooters on the market. On PC, the focus is clearly on performance, with the developers aiming to deliver a smooth and stable experience for as many players as possible. Instead of relying on shortcuts, Bungie wants the game to run well on its own. In fact, the goal is to make performance so solid that players won’t even need features like frame generation to get a good experience.

Frame generation is a modern graphics feature used in technologies like Nvidia DLSS, AMD FSR, and Intel XeSS. It works by creating extra frames using AI to bolster the natively rendered frame. This boosts frame rates significantly and comes in handy for demanding games. Most recently, Nvidia launched DLSS 4.5 with Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and a new 6x mode (up to five AI-generated frames on top of the natively rendered frame).

Is frame generation coming to Marathon?

Right now, Marathon does not support frame generation. Bungie explains in an official FAQ that it is considering adding support for frame generation in the future, especially as the technology continues to improve. They also acknowledged that some players are already using driver-level solutions like AMD Fluid Motion Frames or Nvidia Smooth Motion, and many are having a good experience with those.

We are keeping a close eye on developments in this space, but in the near term, we are prioritizing performance improvements that will increase frame rate without the use of frame generation.

Regardless, Bungie made it clear that this is not their priority right now. The developers said they are focusing on improving performance in a more traditional way. This means optimizing the game for higher native FPS without relying on AI-generated frames. The idea is simple: make the game run better at its core.

This approach makes sense, especially for a fast-paced extraction shooter. A stable frame rate with low latency is more important than inflated numbers. While frame generation may still arrive later, Bungie wants to ensure that Marathon feels smooth and responsive from the start.
