ChatGPT Canvas has some competition as xAI brings a similar feature to Grok AI for free

Elon Musk's xAI took to X to announce the launch of a new feature called “Grok Studio” for its Grok AI chatbot. According to the official post, Grok Studio is a collaborative workspace that allows users “to edit and create documents, generate code for apps and browser games, and more.” The announcement also included a demo video showcasing how the tool works, particularly in generating essays and long-form reports.
Over the past few months, xAI seems to have been on an impressive streak following the release of its latest AI chatbot, Grok 3, which, in early testing, outperformed models from OpenAI and DeepSeek. Now, with Grok Studio, xAI is once again going head-to-head with OpenAI's ChatGPT Canvas features, which offer similar functionality, but Grok Studio has a neat trick up its sleeve.
ChatGPT Canvas, but free
Similar to ChatGPT Canvas, Grok Studio opens a new window in a split-screen interface, allowing users to make real-time edits without having to switch between tabs, streamlining workflows and making collaboration with AI more efficient. However, while the functionality is largely the same, unlike Canvas, which is available to paid users only, Grok Studio will offer its capabilities to both paid and free-tier users.
And that's not all. Apart from content generation, Grok Studio also supports code generation in multiple languages, including Python, C++, JavaScript, TypeScript, and Bash scripts. Users can view how the code functions in a preview section and tweak it as needed. Grok Studio also comes with Google Drive integration, allowing users to attach and work with documents, spreadsheets, and slides directly within the platform.
More updates to come in the future
That said, xAI is calling this the “first version” of Grok Studio, meaning we're most likely going to see the feature expand its capabilities in the near future. For now, though, the initial rollout still looks promising, and the fact that it positions itself as a free alternative to not just ChatGPT Canvas but even Anthropic's Artifacts for Claude could make it a strong contender.
