The ASUS ROG Ally is one of the more popular gaming handhelds on the market, rivaling the likes of the Steam Deck and Lenovo Legion Go. For those out of the loop, the Ally comes in two different forms – the ROG Ally and ROG Ally X, the latter being a refreshed model with improved specs.

One of the biggest differences between the original versus the X is double the battery life, with an 80Whr battery offering longer playtime than the 40Whr in the original model – something that was criticized upon launch. However, rather than paying the extra cash for the Ally X, which retails from $799.99, people a simply modding their older handhelds.

ASUS ROG Ally battery mod is growing in popularity

We originally saw this modification back in November last year, which saw fans labeling it a “ROG Ally X at home“. Well, since then, the mod has grown in popularity, and users are starting to demonstrate the power of the (relatively) simple hardware mod. This is especially thanks to more resources online explaining how to perform the battery upgrade, step-by-step. We’ve seen a growing number of Reddit threads such as this one with people showing off their battery mod.

The most popular modification at the moment is a 74Wh battery; not quite double the original ROG Ally’s 40 Wh, but it’s not far off and users report “roughly double” the battery life. Further modders report that they were “blown away with battery life” and that it was an “easy mod” that is “cheaper than buying an Ally X”. For reference, the 1TB variant of the Ally X will set you back $799.99 on Best Buy at the time of writing, while the original Z1 Extreme ROG Ally (512 GB) costs $649.99 but is often discounted.

If you want to read more about the battery mod, we’d recommend checking out the Reddit post below which details temperature benchmarks between the stock 40Wh battery and the 74Wh replacement – for both the RAM and battery. Speaking of RAM, this is one of the upgrades the ROG Ally X can still boast even with the battery upgrade – with 24GB versus the original’s 16GB.
