dbrand has confirmed it will continue to make Steam Machine-related products following a recent fiasco that saw the company’s new Companion Cube case get canceled. It was forced to refund pre-orders after Valve (the creators of Portal) shut down the project, as it turned out dbrand never bothered to obtain a license to use Valve’s IP.

Gamers were looking forward to dbrand’s Companion Cube ever since it was originally announced, shortly after Valve first unveiled the Steam Machine in November last year. The Portal-themed case made it to the production phase, and pre-orders (alongside a Portal-themed Steam Controller) went live last week. But it didn’t take long for Valve to shut it down.

Steam Machine accessories are still coming soon

According to Steam Deck HQ, which had hands-on with the custom Companion Cube ahead of its wider release, dbrand has confirmed it still plans to make Steam Machine accessories such as skins and faceplates. The outlet says this was confirmed over email.

dbrand’s Companion Cube product page now redirects to an official Reddit post explaining why it was canceled. The post fails to mention the custom Steam Controller skin that could be pre-ordered alongside the cube, but we assume it has also been canceled. Either way, dbrand continues to sell Steam Controller skins with its own designs in its online store.

Right now, there are no Steam Machine accessories available for purchase on the dbrand store – it’s obvious that the Companion Cube was supposed to be a big launch that kicked off proceedings. It was certainly shaping up that way, as dbrand says it “became the second-fastest selling product in our 15-year history” in the aforementioned Reddit post.

If you go ahead and look for Steam Machine skins on the dbrand store, you’re led through a little set of pages that tells us a range of custom skin designs will be available “Soonâ„¢,” and you may sign up for email notifications in the meantime. Another popular accessory brand, JSAUX, also plans to release Steam Machine skins and faceplates sometime this year.
