Another highly anticipated title is hitting the Steam Store and its subsequent handheld gaming PC, the Steam Deck, in the coming months. God of War Ragnarok was a big hit when it was released on Playstation back in 2022. The game became the first of the God of War series to be cross-gen across both PlayStation 4 and 5 and now aims to take the PC world by storm. With that being said, handheld PC gamers may be a little apprehensive of the game’s online capabilities after noticing a worrying sign.
Release date
The wait appears to be nearly over for God of War Ragnarok fans. Yes, the Steam page for God of War Ragnarok has finally launched, allowing players to add the highly anticipated title to their wishlists before its official September 19 release.
However, a potential hurdle has emerged for those hoping to experience the game on the Steam Deck. The Steam page mentions a requirement to link a PlayStation Network (PSN) account, raising concerns about the game’s compatibility with Valve’s portable gaming PC.
Problem on the horizon?
This requirement sparks worry due to a similar situation with the equally popular title Ghost of Tsushima. While the single-player campaign of Ghost of Tsushima is playable on the Steam Deck, the online multiplayer mode remains inaccessible. The reason why? Well, it seems to be the game’s requirement for players to link a PSN account, a feature that doesn’t function on the Deck’s Linux-based SteamOS operating system.
On top of that, not every region has access to PSN, as a surprising amount of countries miss out, so this is another barrier to entry. PlayStation lists all the supported regions on their website if you’re interested.
Not all doom and gloom
A glimmer of hope remains for Steam Deck owners eager to play God of War Ragnarok on the go. Unlike Ghost of Tsushima, there’s no mention of a PlayStation Overlay feature on God of War Ragnarok’s Steam page just yet. The overlay in Tsushima might be the specific element causing incompatibility on the Deck. If the requirement to link a PSN account in God of War is solely for purposes unrelated to offline gameplay, the game could still be playable on the Steam Deck.
Either way, some gamers remain cautious due to the lingering uncertainty, and perhaps the bad memories of the Ghost of Tsushima situation. With the release date approaching, gamers can only wait and see if God of War Ragnarok will be playable on the Steam Deck, especially considering the game’s single-player focus that shouldn’t inherently require a PSN account.
