A couple of weeks ago, Kojima Productions and Xbox revealed their joint partnership for Hideo Kojima’s next project, currently with the working title Physint, in a surprise announcement. Despite publishing its two previous games, Sony Interactive Entertainment will not be working with Kojima on Physint, nor on its upcoming horror game, titled OD.

For context, Kojima has previously collaborated with Sony for exclusive (or PlayStation-focused) titles, including Death Stranding, which originally launched on PS4 before making its way to PC the following year. Its sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, launched on PS5 in 2025 and made its way to PC earlier this year – and it’s still not available on any Xbox console.

Physint dropped by Sony and quickly picked up by Xbox

In a recent interview with IGN, the first with Kojima since Sony ditched the Physint project, Kojima notes that he was invited to a Zoom call with Sony in June. It should be noted that at this time OD was already announced as an Xbox Game Studios-published title, while Physint, a spiritual successor to Kojima’s most famous work, Metal Gear Solid, was planned to be a PlayStation game.

When asked whether Sony ever gave him a reason for canceling the game, Kojima says “not at all” – and Sony has not contacted him since the Zoom call. The MGS creator still doesn’t know exactly why the partnership came to a close; “You would have to ask them [Sony],” he says, and despite the breakup, “I have no bad feelings towards them,” Kojima adds. You can find the full response below.

“No, not at all. They haven’t contacted me ever since. But I’m not fighting with Sony. We’re not in a dispute. But what I want to say is that we’ve been together for 30 years and we have this relationship. So if this was the conclusion, I would’ve wanted to hear it a little earlier. But that meeting in June, they just gave us the final notice.

As I said, my mind went blank, so I didn’t really ask a lot of questions. It was more like, what should I do with my company? So that was what was on my mind at the time. I’ve always been a big Sony fan. I’ve been using a Walkman. All my cameras are Sony. So I have no bad feelings towards them.”

The switch from PlayStation to Xbox publishing has caught the attention of gamers, especially after Kojima posed with Xbox CEO Asha Sharma in recent social media posts. Announced back in 2022, OD is expected to release before Physint, featuring Sophia Lillis and Hunter Schafer. As for Physint, Kojima revealed some prominent cast members in the game on September 17 during Tokyo Game Show, again teaming up with established actors: Bill Skarsgård, Charlee Fraser, Don Lee, and Minami Hamabe.
