Hardware and software work together with a very delicate balance. That said, the software greatly impacts how the hardware operates, and no software is 100% bug-free. That means that with each update or patch, the hardware could work better, if not the same, or completely crash, and then you have to watch for a hotfix to be deployed.
This happens because of numerous factors, but the most frustrating situation is when your device isn’t working as expected, but the software update is working perfectly normally for others. That is what happened with some users with the latest ROG Ally Armory Crate update.
ROG Ally white screen of death – possible fixes
A recent post on the r/ROGAllyX subreddit by u/wesker789 claimed that they updated the Armory Crate and the BIOS and left it for a couple of minutes. However, when they came back, the screen was frozen in bright white.
They tried the age-old method of turning it off and on again, which prompted the BIOS to update, and the issue seemingly almost went away, but the screen border has a white hue along the edges. The comments suggested that others have also experienced this issue, with one comment saying:
“Seen 3 people with this issue since the updates – one person’s went back to normal after a couple of hours of use, one person’s completely died a few hours later… The other is you
It doesn’t look too severe so it may just clear after a few hours – play a pixel refresher YouTube video on repeat.”

We also noticed that even a system restore reportedly didn’t fix the issue. A post on r/ROGAlly also claimed the same thing, along with a bunch of other fixes that include using a pixel refresher, reverting drivers, changing settings, or even reinstalling Windows.
On the bright side, ASUS is said to be following up with people and offering to replace or repair the affected units. However, we haven’t come across any official word from ASUS claiming that, but if your ROG Ally is under warranty, you can try contacting ASUS support for clarification.
Furthermore, a screenshot of a comment by user @bwbmoreb on CPPC TEK’s YouTube video on this matter was posted, which claimed the fix is to turn color marching on and off and that doing so worked for them. So, if you’ve tried all of the other fixes, give this one a shot as well, as it could just fix the problem.
So, to summarize, here’s a full list of potential fixes.
- Update the BIOS
- Use a pixel refresher video on YouTube
- Roll back drivers and Armory Crate version
- Reinstall windows
- Go into Display Settings > Toggle Color Marching on and off
Unfortunately, nothing seems to be 100% consistent based on what we know so far, but these are at least worth trying out before you resort to taking it up with ASUS directly.
