Microsoft has upgraded its Copilot AI chatbot with a new feature that is immediately useful for anyone putting together a quick Canva design. For those unaware, Canva is a set of tools for graphic design, largely aimed at creating presentations, visuals for websites, or other similar products. Now, you can simply ask Copilot to generate a design for you.

Once the design is generated, it is still editable to your liking – so this AI-powered tool is a nice way to whip up a quick draft before you can get to work tailoring it to your exact needs. Copilot has secure access to users’ Canva accounts and can aid with generating new presentations, resizing graphics, or autofilling templates.

Generate a Canva design by chatting with Copilot

You can read more about Microsoft’s partner ecosystem, which now includes Canva, here. The addition to Copilot follows a similar integration with ChatGPT last month; both are powered by Canva’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server. The Copilot integration is available via Microsoft 365 Copilot, under the ‘Chat’ tab (see images below), which requires an active subscription to access.

With just a prompt, users can:

  • Generate any design type (social posts, presentations, etc.) based on the chat, e.g. “Canva, create a pitch deck based on this conversation”
  • Browse, search & summarize existing Canva designs and assets in Copilot
  • Coming soon: Autofill brand templates with labeled, formatted data from AI-generated insights, and edit text and images in designs

Earlier integrations of Canva into AI chatbots, including ChatGPT and Claude, have helped the graphic design suite to be listed in the top 10 ‘most-referred’ internet destinations by Large Language Models (LLMs). It’s noted that these AI tools have been used on Canva “22 billion times,” and the addition of Copilot support should see usage grow further.
