Microsoft introduces Cloud Rebuild recovery for Windows 11, so you can clean install without a USB
Table of Contents
Microsoft is making it easier to recover a Windows 11 PC when something goes seriously wrong. A new feature called Cloud Rebuild can download a fresh copy of Windows 11 along with the drivers required for the device, allowing users to perform a complete reinstall without preparing a USB drive or recovery image beforehand.
Cloud Rebuild is being introduced through the optional KB5127936 update, released on October 28 for Windows 11 25H2 and 26H2. Microsoft is rolling out the feature gradually, so installing the update doesn’t necessarily mean it will immediately appear on every supported PC.
While Windows 11 already offers a Cloud Download option through Reset this PC, Cloud Rebuild takes the recovery process further. It doesn’t depend on the existing Windows installation being in working condition, meaning it can still be used if the operating system is damaged and the computer can no longer boot normally.

How to perform a Cloud Rebuild
If Windows is working, users can find the new option by heading to Settings > System > Recovery > Rebuild PC. The computer will then restart into the Windows Recovery Environment, or WinRE, where the recovery process takes place.
Cloud Rebuild can also be accessed when Windows won’t start. After repeated failed boot attempts, the PC can automatically enter WinRE, where users can select Cloud Rebuild from the recovery options. From there, the computer connects to the internet and downloads a fresh Windows image and the necessary device drivers through Windows Update.
There are some requirements, however. WinRE itself needs to be working, the computer needs an internet connection through Ethernet or Wi-Fi, and the necessary hardware drivers must be available through Windows Update.
There is also one major warning to keep in mind: Cloud Rebuild is designed as a full reinstall rather than a simple repair. The system drive is reformatted during the process, removing installed applications, settings, accounts, and locally stored files. Microsoft also provides an optional sanitization feature that can securely erase data from the drive before reinstalling Windows.
