Following its launch on June 10th, MindsEye has received a mixed reception. It has received a mixed review rating on Steam, while on the Xbox and PlayStation stores, it has also averaged three stars out of five. Just looking at the Reddit for the game gives us a rather quick overview of why the scores are so low.

The game created by an ex-GTA dev has had some rather big teething issues. With performance hits across all platforms, it’s especially hard on the consoles, where the performance is supposedly not even 30fps. Looking at the PC system requirements, you might be able to see why, as the minimum requires an RTX 2060/5600XT with a Ryzen 5/Core i5, while the recommended is an RTX 4070/RX 6800XT and a 7800X3D or i7-13700K.

With that, the introduction of relatively new and mid-to-high-end requirements has highlighted just how poor the performance is otherwise. Leading to many on the Reddit page showcasing the faults and showing their refunds being processed on consoles. Even with the devs promising hotfixes, the impression has been made on many, and it’s too little, too late, that reminds me of what happened when Cyberpunk 2077 initially came out, both seemingly too soon for their own good.

Low player numbers and refunds galore

Although not the only platform the game is on, one we can use to see some metrics, SteamDB showcases the number of players online. Having peaked at just over 3,300 on its release, the number dropped back down to 1,400 in the past day, halving its initial value and potentially indicating that many players aren’t returning to the game.

We don’t get to see what kind of refund numbers the game is gathering, but some users are showing that they are possible, even on consoles. Two users shared their PlayStation support journey, and although usually downloaded content can’t be refunded, an exception is currently in place for this game.

With the support stating “The situation is currently under investigation.”, it’s seemingly taking the same stance as with the initial CyberPunk release. So those who feel cheated out of a surprising $60 should be able to get their money back.
