Minecraft splitscreen mod comes to Steam Deck and it might be possible in other games too

Minecraft is already one of the best games to play on the Steam Deck, but what if you could take things up a notch and play it split-screen? While Mojang hasn't added official support for split-screen on the Deck, the community stepped in with a clever workaround that actually works, and it's all thanks to a Reddit user.
Redditor ArnoldSmith68 created a script called “minecraft-splitscreen script” after wanting to play the game with their son. Essentially, this script automatically detects how many external controllers are connected, and from there, it takes care of everything on its own. That includes launching the right number of Minecraft instances, arranging each game window neatly, removing the borders, and even lining them up to create a proper split-screen setup.
Over 4 players can join in
According to the creator, the script allows up to 4 players to join your split-screen setup. However, in their Reddit post, they mentioned that the Steam Deck struggles a bit while everyone loads the chunks, but it's still very playable. The only complicated part is getting the script running, which requires installing programs like PollyMC, Forge, downloading the script, and more. So, if this is your first time modding your game, you'll probably need some help.
Luckily, the GitHub page for the script includes a step-by-step installation guide. But for anyone who wants a visual tutorial, we are still waiting for someone to upload one. Once you’re done with the process, running the script will automatically do its thing, and you won't have to worry about anything from there. The script also works when using Steam Deck's Game Mode as well.
Is split-screen in other games possible now?
Interestingly, the creator behind this Minecraft split screen believes it's possible for other titles as well, as long as players can launch games from a shell script. In fact, they mention having a similar script for Super Mario 64 splitscreen, which they plan to share in the near future. For now, though, you can hook up the Deck to your TV and play Minecraft split screen with your friend.
