The market for handheld gaming devices has exploded since the release of the Steam Deck, with many rivals popping up from the likes of MSI and Asus ROG as well as upstarts like Ayaneo. Most of these competitors use Windows, which for some is a less-than-ideal experience in handheld format. However, a Reddit user has been hard at work on a project that could change that for the better.

One of the major advantages that the Steam Deck has over its Windows-based rivals is the use of SteamOS. This provides a simplified, console-like interface that is easy to navigate with gamepad controls. One Reddit user called EnigmaP3nguin had a vision of a way to make the experience of a Windows handheld just as smooth and user-friendly as that of Steam Deck, and teamed up with a friend to make that dream a reality.

Winhanced could be available sooner rather than later

The project has been dubbed ‘Winhanced' and is now approaching the milestone of an Early Access release.  EnigmaP3nguin says that not every feature they envisioned will be implemented in this initial version, and some bugs are to be expected, but those who choose to test out Winhanced on their Asus ROG Ally or MSI Claw will be able to test out a raft of features.

These features include:

  • App Home Screen view
  • App Game Library view
  • Steam Library integration
  • Xbox Gamepass library integration
  • In-game overlay using Xbox guide button
  • Performance profiles controllable via overlay
  • Frame rate limiting using RTSS
  • Device resolution controls
  • TDP quick switches and Auto TDP
  • Controller remapping and custom profiles via overlay

Winhanced is designed to launch on startup and aims to improve the quality of life experience for Windows handheld users. The project took less than two months to put together, and being an Early Access release, EnigmaP3nguin warns that early adopters should expect some bugs and visual quirks as issues are ironed out.

So far, there is official support for the ROG Ally, ROG Ally X, Legion Go, and Steam Deck. Those interested in reporting potential bugs and suggesting features can join the Winhanced Discord channel.
