ASUS has finally unveiled the ROG Ally X, the successor to their popular handheld gaming PC. While it retains the same AMD Z1 Extreme processor, some other aspects have been significantly upgraded. You’ll find a new chassis, improved battery life, better thermal performance, and more on this new handheld PC. Unveiled just ahead of Computex 2024, fans are sure to be extra pumped for this latest ASUS handheld upgrade with release date anticipation now on the rise.
Storage & memory boost
Storage capacity gets a major boost with the inclusion of a 1TB M.2 2280 SSD. This not only offers more space for games but also opens up a wider range of replacement options compared to the smaller 2230 drives used previously. RAM is doubled to a whopping 24GB of DDR5-7500 memory, with 8GB dedicated to the Z1 Extreme’s integrated graphics.
Another key improvement is found under the hood. The ROG Ally X features a brand-new motherboard that ditches the limitations of the previous model. This new motherboard offers full support for larger and more affordable 2280 form factor M.2 SSDs. For a full product breakdown, head over to our ASUS ROG Ally X release date & specs page.

Battery life doubled
Battery life is another area that sees a dramatic improvement. The ROG Ally X boasts an 80Wh battery, double the capacity of the original model. ASUS has also addressed thermal management with larger heat pipes and quieter fans. This translates to better performance with an increased TDP. Performance mode is now boosted to 17W, while silent mode reaches 13W. These additional upgrades are sure to benefit users and improve the overall gameplay experience of the product.
Revamped design and ports
The design of the ROG Ally X has also been revamped. It now sports a sleek all-black color scheme and features improved controls. The D-pad has been refined, the joysticks are redesigned for better durability (rated for five million cycles compared to the Steam Deck’s two million), and a smaller macro button has been strategically placed on the back for easy access.
The biggest change to the ports is the replacement of the XGM port with a second USB Type-C port, with one featuring Thunderbolt compatibility for connecting an external GPU. While the display remains the same 7-inch FHD touchscreen with 120Hz refresh rate, it seems upgrades like a higher resolution might have to wait for a future ROG Ally 2.
