One of the best things about the Steam Deck is that Valve seems to have no intention of dropping support. The device enjoys consistent updates, with multiple update channels to choose from, depending on how up-to-date you want to stay. Another great thing about the Deck is that it makes it clear which games run well (for the most part) with Valve’s verification system.
A recent Steam Deck Beta Client Update brings an important fix if you want to enjoy the simplicity of gaming on the Deck without worrying about performance. A fix to the compatibility review process has been pushed in the Beta version.
Steam Deck Beta Client Update fixes default configuration settings
A Beta Client Update dated April 2nd involves just one patch note, but it’s an important one. Valve says it has “fixed a situation” where the Steam Deck compatibility review process would not apply the correct configuration. This implies that some games were not being tested with the correct config, therefore failing to properly optimize the default settings for Steam Deck users.

Games that are Steam Deck Verified should boot up with a default graphics configuration that you don’t need to tinker with – it is designed to perform well out of the box. It’s worth pointing out that Valve doesn’t always get this right, but it has amended ratings in the past, one recent example being Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which had its compatibility rating downgraded due to poor performance on the default settings.
The Last of Us Part II Remastered came to Steam on April 3rd, and it is supported on the Deck. The PC project director for the game, Coen Frauenfelder, recently said that Steam Deck support “is so important” and confirmed that the game ships with “specific Steam Deck presets” to make sure the game runs at a stable 30 FPS out of the box.
Since this update, Valve has pushed another Beta version, which brings a couple of more changes – namely, a fix for the SteamOS startup movie and UI Scale slider changes. If you want to participate in the latest beta version, tap the ‘Steam’ button on your Deck, go to system settings, and navigate to the ‘Beta Participation’ options.
