Week 42’s GPU sales report from Mindfactory, a major German retailer, is out, and it shows AMD is neck and neck with NVIDIA in terms of market share. According to the retailer’s reports, AMD sold 1,120 units, while NVIDIA sold 1,125, accounting for 49.23% and 49.45% of the total GPU market, respectively. In case you were wondering, Intel managed to sell only 30 units with a market share of 1.32%.

Major credit for AMD's boost in sales goes to the RX 7800 XT, which continues to beat all other GPUs in sales. Mindfactory sold a total of 305 units of the Radeon RX 7800 XT between October 14th-20th. For reference, the next AMD card in the list is the RX 7900 XT, with 190 units sold. In our RX 7800 XT review, we described it as “a leading 1440p graphics card for its price point, undercutting its competition significantly”. So, it’s easy to see why gamers are choosing this card over other options.

AMD has created quite a gap

The 4080 Super and 4070 Super hold the second and third positions, respectively, with 230 and 220 units sold each. Notably, the gap of 75 units between the chart-topping RX 7800 XT and the RTX 4080 Super is the largest difference between any two GPUs on the list.

Thanks to the two Super series cards (RTX 4080 and 4070), NVIDIA's average selling price for the week remained $135 higher than AMD's by at $667, while AMD trailed behind at $532.

The future looks good for the RX 8000 series

With AMD improving in weekly sales and its mid-range option eating the competition, it looks like AMD has settled on a strategy to beat NVIDIA in the gaming space. This is further supported by the likelihood that the upcoming RX 8000 series will skip high-end GPUs, indicating AMD has recognized its strength in the mid-range segment, and the success of RX 7800 XT backs it up.

Of course, for this to become a reality, AMD will need to deliver a true successor to the RX 7800 XT rather than just a mild refresh. Based on current predictions, the RX 8000 series release date could be set for Q1 2025.
