PlayStation 6 release date is still undecided, says Sony CEO, rising costs have “affected the rollout of the PS6”

You may be tempted to turn to leaks or speculation about when the PlayStation 6 will be available, but it turns out that even Sony doesn’t know just yet. Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki, who has been with the company since 1987, became the president and CEO of Sony Group Corporation in April 2025, and he admits there is uncertainty due to factors such as memory shortages.
A recent article from the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), discussing how Totoki is overhauling the company, touches on the current lack of a launch window for the PS6. Plenty of questions remain about Sony’s next-gen console, which remains officially unannounced. Xbox has at least given us a teaser for its next system, Project Helix, which supports both PC and Xbox titles.
When will Sony release the PS6?
As pointed out in the WSJ article, Sony’s shares “are down about 2.5% over the past year, reflecting rising costs for essentials such as memory chips that are affecting the broader entertainment and gaming industry”. It’s worth pointing out that NAND flash availability has also been affected, though SSD prices could finally start settling next year.

Falling shares and rising costs have “affected the rollout of the PS6,” reports WSJ. According to the report, the potential for a release next year has “drifted further out because of the global shortage of key components caused by the ravenous demand from AI”. A late 2027 launch had been suggested, and respected leaker KeplerL2 denied reports of a delay to 2028 or 2029.
There have already been a few rumors about the PlayStation 6, along with a potential PS6 handheld. Speculation from earlier this year suggested the PS6 will not get a larger-capacity SSD, perhaps due to ongoing shortages and price hikes. On top of that, there is some expectation of a digital-only console after Sony announced the end of PlayStation disc production, effective January 2028. Gamers continue to post backlash online – something that has reportedly annoyed publishers.
