PlayStation’s social media posts have been getting a whole lot more attention after the company announced the end of physical discs for its consoles. From January 2028 onwards, PlayStation game discs will no longer be in production, and the bombshell announcement continues to be a big talking point among gamers online. So much so, it’s disrupting the company’s posts on X.

Users are now using the Community Notes feature on X to spread backlash against PlayStation’s physical disc decision, making sure it doesn’t go unmissed. PlayStation’s first post after the disc announcement came nearly a week later, but it’s clear that gamers aren’t letting up. The new ‘added context’ is now front and center and highlights that digital content “may not last long”.

Gamers are targeting PlayStation’s X posts to spread the word

Community Notes on X allow users to contribute to a post in a way designed to “keep people better informed”. These summarized notes appear below posts and are commonly used to highlight misinformation or otherwise misleading posts. In other words, if you’ve been ‘community noted’, then something is probably off – or you’re being targeted.

If you head over to PlayStation’s account on X and click on any of the recent posts, you’ll likely be met by a top comment on the topic of physical media and game discs. Prior to the big announcement on July 1, many of the bog-standard posts on the account advertising new features or games got a couple of hundred comments at best – now each one is filled with thousands.

Another community note reads “Sony is currently attempting to establish a digital monopoly by eliminating physical media,” highlighting that the loss of physical media means the loss of resale value. Speaking of which, retailer GAME España reacted to the news by pledging its commitment to game collectors and other physical media fans.

Unlike PC stores such as Steam, which has direct competition and key resales on third-party sites (including bundle sites such as Humble Bundle and Fanatical), Sony’s PlayStation Store offers a much more closed-off system that lacks alternatives.

Gamers aren’t letting PlayStation get away with this lightly. There has been no official response regarding the backlash, and it’s becoming difficult to imagine there will be anything of the sort. Either way, at the same time as all the complaints on social media, an online petition named “Don’t kill the disc” has been making waves – now up to ~275,000 signatures.
