At the recent State of Unreal 2025 event, CD Projekt Red gave fans their first real look at The Witcher 4 in action. The new game is built using Unreal Engine 5.6, and the team used the event to show off a tech demo filled with impressive visuals and game mechanics. The demo was not only beautiful, but it also showed the progress being made on what might become one of the most advanced open-world games yet.

First look at The Witcher 4 in action

The tech demo starts with a short cinematic scene. A group of men are attacked by a flying creature near a broken-down carriage. The camera then smoothly moves into gameplay, showing Ciri investigating the area. It's clear right away that the graphics have taken a big step forward. The developers confirmed that everything shown was running on a standard PlayStation 5 with ray tracing turned on and at 60 frames per second.

Ciri's horse, Kelpie, is also introduced. The attention to detail is impressive, with Kelpie's muscles and movement looking lifelike. While riding through forests and rocky terrain, you can see the full power of Unreal Engine's new foliage system, as grass, trees, and plants are rendered in great detail.

Later in the demo, Ciri arrives at a busy port town called Valdrest. This part of the video highlights how alive the world feels. The town is filled with people going about their day, such as meeting others, shopping, and reacting to what's happening around them. For example, Ciri bumps into a man carrying a crate of apples. He drops some, and a nearby child quickly runs to pick them up while a pig goes over to eat them. These small, natural reactions make the world feel real.

The characters in the town are powered by MetaHuman technology, which helps them show realistic movements and emotions. Conversations also flow smoothly, as when Ciri speaks to someone, the game transitions into a cutscene without any loading screens. Thanks to this, you won’t have to worry about annoying black screens. The best part is that even though the tech demo was running on a PS5, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that all the features shown will be available on every platform.

While the PS5 demo already looks incredible, the PC version could look even better, especially on the latest RTX 50-series cards. Players can expect higher resolution textures, smoother frame rates, and even more advanced ray tracing effects. Nvidia’s latest DLSS technology also helps boost performance while keeping the visuals sharp, so we’re excited to see how the PC version will look.
