Fresh reports suggest Nintendo is already thinking about building an OLED version of the Nintendo Switch 2 following its release last year. It’s still very early days, but a Switch 2 OLED is reportedly being evaluated to determine whether such an upgrade is financially feasible, as a comparable 1080p OLED display could require a significant price difference.

This isn’t the only Switch model news we’ve reported on lately, as European customers are being treated to a new Switch 2 by early 2027, with an “easily replaceable” battery to keep in line with new EU regulations. The change is also expected to affect Nintendo’s existing Joy-Con and Pro Controller designs. It’s fair to say a newer OLED model would follow the same rules.

Nintendo Switch 2 OLED could arrive in late 2027

Reports from the Korean publication zdnet.co.kr claim that Nintendo of Japan is “considering” bringing an OLED panel to its Switch 2 console. The new model would see Nintendo improving the Switch 1 OLED’s HD (1280 x 720) screen to a full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution to keep in line with the 1080p screen currently fitted into the Nintendo Switch 2.

“Nintendo is considering releasing a Switch 2 OLED with the resolution upgraded from HD (1280 x 720) of the Switch 1 OLED model to FHD (1920 x 1080). If the release of the Switch 2 OLED model is decided, there is a possibility that product development will begin at the end of this year.”

Based on the timeline presented above, it could mean that mass production of an OLED Switch 2 may be expected by the end of 2027 or the beginning of 2028, around two and a half years since the LCD model launched in June 2025. For comparison, the original Nintendo Switch didn’t get an OLED variant for nearly four and a half years – aside from the panel change, the newer model also shipped with a larger 7″ screen and 64GB of internal storage, versus the LCD’s 32GB.

As mentioned earlier, upgrading to a more vibrant OLED panel will only up production costs, which will in turn be passed onto consumers. Nintendo Switch 2 price hikes already happened in Japan this May and are coming to the US, Canada, and Europe on September 5, and Nintendo’s president already claims they decided against an even higher increase.
