A user on Reddit by the name of Top_Leek_3743 has opted to refund the poorly reviewed Concord and got a shock when they discovered the refund amount was 5X what they paid. Many of the comments in the Reddit post joke that “Steam clearly felt pity on you and threw you a bone” as one comment reads. but why has this happened? We see clearly the refund amount for the Digital Delux Edition was $65.54. So why does that magically turn into $327?
We think that this user might have participated in the Beta of the game that happened last month, and Steam has, for some reason, assigned a value to that beta. Resulting in the user getting back more than what they paid, that must have been one steep value assigned to that beta.
One begs the question, will this user be able to keep the money, and will this have any kind of negative repercussions? We reached out to the user to find out, but we have not yet received a response. Over $250 will have been misallocated by Steam, and it depends if Steam will miss it. Unlikely since its parent company, Valve, is worth around $6.9 Billion in 2024 according to Bloomberg, but it didn’t get there by handing out free money.
We can’t find any instances of Steam going on a crusade to claim back a couple of hundred dollars from an incorrect refund, but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen. To avoid any issues, this user should probably contact customer support and report the issue. Steam is a pretty good platform, so it might even reward the user for his honesty.
What would you do if it were you in this situation? Would you contact Steam, or would you keep the money for yourself? it remains to be seen whether the refund is legitimate or it’s just a glitch in the UI of Steam. But one thing is for sure, it could drive up the sales of Concord if it’s repeatable.
