DOOM: The Dark Ages gets its full release tomorrow, on May 15th, but players who bought the Premium Edition have already been duking it out with demons for a couple of days now. Overall, the response to the latest instalment in the DOOM franchise has been positive, despite 8GB GPUs being pushed to their limits and the game struggling to run smoothly on Valve’s popular Steam Deck handheld.

There are a couple of avenues of graphics that PC gamers sometimes have to resort to fan-made fixes for: ultrawide and HDR implementation. Luckily, The Dark Ages supports 21:9 and 32:9 resolutions without a problem. The same can’t be said for HDR, though, with washed-out visuals ruining the experience. Luckily, fans have already found an easy fix to combat washed-out colors in HDR more.

HDR fix for DOOM: The Dark Ages

This fix will remain relevant until id Software/Bethesda deploys an update to address the problem officially. Until then, here’s the easy workaround to make HDR in DOOM: The Dark Ages look less washed-out:

  • Go to HDR calibration menu in-game (Display Calibration)
  • Change ‘HDR Max Nits’ setting to match your monitor
  • Enable any color blind profile in-game (under Video, Accessibility options)
  • Set strength and intensity to 0%
  • Adjust the contrast slider to your liking (around 80% recommended)
  • Set brightness to your liking (35-50% recommended)

If you’re looking to get the very best visuals out of DOOM: The Dark Ages on your HDR-ready gaming monitor, this fix is for you. We imagine it looks great on any OLED monitor. All things said, this color blind setting tweak isn’t perfect, but the results are immediately noticeable. We recommend checking the video from GamingTech above if you want to see some nice before-and-after comparisons. Unfortunately, we don’t yet know when or if the developers plan to address this issue.
