This is the second time we’ve seen someone turn their ASUS ROG Ally into an ‘Ally DS’

Table of Contents
The ASUS ROG Ally has once again been transformed into a unique dual-screen device by a resourceful user. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this clever mod, but we do feel it looks a little sleeker this time, or maybe it’s just better photography.
Anyway, the mastermind behind this “Ally DS” creation, documented on the r/ROGAlly subreddit, has outfitted their Ally with a Wisecoco 7 Inch 1920×1080 FHD Portable Monitor. This secondary display seamlessly integrates with the Ally thanks to a combination of the AllyMate and phone mount, with a MagSafe sticker providing a secure attachment for the monitor. While the total weight adds up to nearly 950 grams, the trade-off is a truly portable dual-screen experience. One that packs much more of a punch than your Nintendo DS.

ASUS ROG Ally mod offers excellent functionality
The beauty of this mod lies in its functionality. The Wisecoco monitor utilizes a single USB-C cable for video, power, and touch input, streamlining the setup process. This allows the user to enjoy DS and 3DS games in their original two-screen format, replicating the classic handheld experience.
However, there’s a slight hurdle with DS emulation. While 3DS emulation seems straightforward, directly splitting the screens onto separate displays with current emulators proves tricky. The user acknowledges some “hacky” workarounds, but emphasizes the ease of 3DS emulation on the Ally DS.
This creative project showcases the adaptability of the ROG Ally and the dedication of its user base. The Ally DS serves as a compelling example of how tech enthusiasts can push boundaries and create unique gaming experiences. With further advancements in emulation, the Ally DS might just become the ultimate handheld platform for revisiting cherished DS classics.
It isn’t the first time we’ve seen this mod
While this may seem like a one-of-a-kind device (well, it’s certainly not being mass-produced), we’ve seen this idea done before. Going back four months now, GitHub user YesItsKira uploaded a similar project: the ROG Ally 2nd Screen Mod.
While they didn’t exactly style it like a DS, it serves a similar purpose. However, the monitor of choice does seem a little bulkier and not as sleek as the most recent attempt. Either way, it just shows how much you can do with the ROG Ally – no doubt we’ll be seeing similar modifications once the ROG Ally X turns up.
