Mixing game development with artificial intelligence has already proven to be a controversial topic, but it’s not something Unity Technologies (the company behind the Unity game engine) is shying away from. There already exists a suite of AI tools for the engine named Unity AI, and this technology is being pushed further to allow users to create content without writing code.

The company’s CEO says Unity AI will be getting upgraded this year, allowing for “casual” game creation with “natural language only” – that’s to say, without hours spent coding and scripting. Of course, it’s difficult to imagine the quality of such a product without a demo, but we’ll soon get to see what it’s capable of at the annual Game Developer Conference (GDC) next month.

Unity AI promises to speed up game development

This information comes from a recent earnings call at Unity, where CEO Matthew Bromberg talks about the upcoming Unity AI upgrades to be showcased at GDC. He says the tech will “democratize” game development by allowing non-coders to produce content quickly, removing “as much friction from the creative process as possible, becoming the universal bridge between the first spark of creativity and a successful, scalable, and enduring digital experience”.

“AI-driven authoring is our second major area of focus for 2026.

At the Game Developer Conference in March, we’ll be unveiling a beta of the new upgraded Unity AI, which will enable developers to prompt full casual games into existence with natural language only, native to our platform, so it’s simple to move from prototype to finished product.”

Bromberg suggests that “tens of millions” more people will be creating “interactive entertainment” thanks to the introduction of AI tools into game engines like Unity. The company hopes to be an industry leader for this form of game dev, and its popular, free game engine provides easy access to budding game devs.

Legal guidelines for Unity AI disclose the use of large language models from OpenAI (GPT) and Meta (Llama) for “various stages in the Assistant pipeline” – this likely means features such as code generation and answering user queries.
