Unreal Tournament 2004 is now free with a community patch over 20 years later, Linux and macOS support included
Though you won’t find Unreal (and Unreal Tournament) games on the Epic Games Store, these are the titles that really helped put Epic Games, or Epic MegaGames as it was known, and its eponymous game engine on the map. CEO Tim Sweeney refers to an ‘Unreal era’ as the company’s second, spanning from 1998 to 2005, before moving on to console and Gears of War. Of course, now Fortnite remains its biggest IP, and we can blame Fortnite for the cancellation of a Unreal Tournament reboot.
The good news is that old Unreal games can be found for free online these days, as Epic has given permission to the Internet Archive to host the files online. This led to Unreal Gold and Unreal Tournament appearing as free downloads in late 2024, and now, the team behind this project has provided free access to Unreal Tournament 2004, one of the series’ most popular entries.
Unreal Tournament 2004 is a free download on Windows, Linux, and macOS
A full game installer for UT2004 can be downloaded from the Old Unreal website. Additionally, all of these files are kept safe on GitHub, uploaded by Stijn Volckaert, a computer science professor and maintainer of several Unreal Engine-related projects. As well as being compatible with Windows, the game is available for Linux and macOS users via separate installers – this includes installation available to the Steam Deck and upcoming Steam Machine running SteamOS, which is based on Linux.

Valve’s upcoming Steam Frame VR headset also runs the Linux-based operating system, with standalone play available. So, we can imagine playing it on a large augmented screen, though proper VR support sounds more questionable.
In addition to the installation files, Volckaert has also uploaded a new patch, “the first public patch for Unreal Tournament 2004 in over 20 years,” which includes improvements and quality-of-life improvements designed to cater to more modern systems, as well as those running Linux or macOS.
Hi everyone! Thank you for your patience. This is a preview of our 3374 patch. It has gone through internal testing and is relatively stable. It works in online games, except on servers with AntiTCC. We will release a new, 3374-compatible version of AntiTCC soon to address this issue.
Please note that this is the first public patch for Unreal Tournament 2004 in over 20 years. We have implemented numerous fixes and improvements, written a new SDL backend for Linux and macOS, and even a new renderer. We have also migrated the entire codebase to modern build systems. Some new bugs may have slipped in!
