We don’t need AI for “massive success” says Atomic Heart director, and DLSS 5 support is still something to “evaluate”
Atomic Heart developer Mundfish has shared its thoughts on two of the gaming industry’s biggest talking points right now: AI-generated development tools and Nvidia’s DLSS 5 technology. And based on comments from studio founder and CEO Robert Bagratuni, it sounds like the team is taking a careful approach with both.
During an interview with Wccftech, Bagratuni explained that while the studio sees potential in AI tools and new rendering technologies, Mundfish does not feel the need to fully rely on them right now. According to him, the team still believes human creativity is the most important part of game development.
Mundfish’s philosophy on generative AI and DLSS 5
The discussion started around Nvidia DLSS 5, which was revealed earlier this year and quickly became one of the most debated gaming technologies online. Some players and developers are excited about its AI-driven image generation and performance improvements, while others are worried about its ‘AI filter-like’ visuals.

Game devs have already clashed over the neural rendering feature, Kingdom Come: Deliverance director Daniel Vávra says it’s “just a little uncanny beginning”. We recently got word from Samson devs, Liquid Swords, that DLSS 5 doesn’t seem production-ready just yet, though that will likely change by the time Atomic Heart 2 comes around.
Mundfish already supports technologies like DLSS Super Resolution and Frame Generation in Atomic Heart, so naturally, people are curious to know if DLSS 5 support was next. Bagratuni described the technology as “a very new and highly promising technology,” but didn’t fully confirm support for it. Instead, he explained that the studio is closely following its progress and evaluating whether it would actually benefit players before making any decisions.
This cautious approach extends to AI-generated development tools. Bagratuni admitted that the studio spent time researching how neural networks and AI systems could help speed up development, especially during pre-production, where ideas, concepts, and prototypes are created. He acknowledged that AI can help iterate faster and reduce development time.
“Despite the obvious advantages of AI, we are confident that our team can achieve massive success without relying on it daily. That being said, we continue to closely monitor the evolution of AI tech and don’t rule out the possibility of adopting it in the future.”

Mundfish has currently decided against integrating AI tools into its everyday production pipeline. The studio feels it can still achieve major success without depending on AI-generated workflows on a daily basis. Right now, the developer is actively working on Atomic Heart 2 and The Cube (an MMORPG shooter).
At the same time, the studio is not completely rejecting AI either. Bagratuni made it clear that the company is continuing to monitor how the technology evolves and may consider using it in the future if it becomes genuinely useful. He also pointed out that AI should be treated as a tool rather than something that replaces artists, writers, or developers.
