Ever wanted to star in Baldur’s Gate 3? Well, you will soon have the chance to… sort of. The talented team behind the upcoming fan-made expansion Path To Menzoberranzan, which promises to be the biggest and most ambitious custom campaign yet, sat down with us to talk us through plans for their upcoming work. And just like in Larian’s game, voice acting is going to be front and center.

Fans can audition for this massive Baldur’s Gate 3 mod

Path to Menzoberranzan brings players back to Athkatla, aka the City of Coin, from Baldur’s Gate 2 alongside some very specific gameplay mechanics. Bringing entirely custom storylines, companions, and more to the game, the project will also be looking for volunteer voice actors to bring the game’s NPCs to life (though it should be noted that auditions are not yet open, so hold fire on those applications!).

“We need your voice,” said Thomas Loughlin, one of the leads on the project. “We’ve got a very specific process that we’re going to be following, so anyone can submit an audio tape, just like it would be a regular audition in film or TV.”

Baldur’s Gate 3 is known for having some of the finest voice work in any video game… ever. While the team acknowledges the monumental task ahead, they are encouraged to hit the high bar set by Larian – thanks to just how talented and passionate the BG3 community is.

“We’ve got more than 500 people on our Discord. We reached over 500 people yesterday and so many of them are incredibly talented voice actors,” he said. “We’ve had people submitting their reels already. We’ve had people doing so many different voices.

“I’m lucky enough to know some incredible voice actors who know some incredible voice actors, who are bringing that experience in as well. But we’ve got like people who have gone like ‘yeah I’d like to try and give it a go’ and then just do this insane, incredible piece of work, and I’m like ‘of course we want you to be a part of this project!’

The team also shed light on the challenges of reverse engineering mod tools and understanding BG3's proprietary Divinity Engine, and believe they’ve just scratched the surface of what can be achieved with Larian’s game.

“[Readers] may be excited about our stuff, but we are equally as excited about the things that we know about,” Loughlin said. “The future is so bright for the morning community within Baldur's Gate. I can't imagine where we're going to be this time next year.”

If you want to read more on this project, we also discussed game mod development – and the one limitation they have to fight through. Fans who want to find out more about the team's project can join their Discord, or check out Lotrich's Patreon for additional screenshots, music, and more.
