Anthropic, the company behind Claude, has struck a five-billion-dollar deal with AMD to deploy up to 2 gigawatts of MI450 Series GPUs inside AMD Helios racks. AMD’s official press release claims the first gigawatt of this deployment will begin in the first half of 2027, with Anthropic working to optimize its popular Claude AI chatbot and associated models for the hardware.

MI450 is the flagship series of AMD Instinct data center GPUs. These are also being used in AMD’s 6-gigawatt partnership with Meta, which was announced in February this year. AMD also claims it will “broadly adopt Claude across its engineering and product development teams” as part of the deal. Last month’s Claude Fable 5 AI model quickly grabbed the internet’s attention.

AMD and Anthropic will be working together for years to come

The $5 billion partnership aims to serve the growing demand for Claude by adopting AMD Helios (the name of AMD’s rack-scale AI infrastructure) with flagship AMD Instinct MI455X GPUs, AMD EPYC “Venice” CPUs, AMD Pensando networking, and ROCm software. AMD says it’s “a multi-year engineering collaboration” that will make Claude an integral part of AMD software development.

“We are thrilled to deepen our partnership with Anthropic and deploy AMD Helios at gigawatt scale. This collaboration brings together Anthropic’s leadership in frontier AI with the full strength of AMD high-performance computing. Together, we will accelerate AI adoption at scale and establish Helios as a major platform for the next generation of AI infrastructure.”

Anthropic’s co-founder and chief compute officer, Tom Brown, says, “Access to compute is central to keeping Claude at the frontier and meeting demand from our customers”. He also adds that working with AMD allows the company to run its AI compute across a “diversified range of hardware” – keep in mind Anthropic already has investment from Nvidia and Microsoft.

While a 2 gigawatt deal is far from the biggest AI company deal we’ve seen, it’s a notable investment from Team Red (AMD). Even still, rival Nvidia would probably still remind everyone it’s “a generation ahead of the industry,” as it continues to lead the pack while making up to $100 billion deals with OpenAI and promising at least 10 gigawatts of AI systems.
