Capcom has officially apologized for a security breach related to its Capcom ID service, affecting a total of 11,774,247 users worldwide. The video game giant is behind the likes of the Resident Evil, Street Fighter, and Monster Hunter franchises. It’s worth noting that Street Fighter 6 is likely the main title affected by this breach, as its online multiplayer services require a Capcom ID.

The service was launched in 2020, and for the most part, a Capcom ID account is only required for multiplayer features. In titles such as Resident Evil Requiem, it’s only necessary for linking accounts (Steam, Epic Games, Nintendo Switch, etc.) to retain your saves cross-platform. Interestingly, Monster Hunter Wilds doesn’t require one, unless you want to link an ID for a bonus item.

Email addresses are exposed, but your credit card information is safe

Capcom provided an overview of what’s affected in an official press release earlier today. Additionally, the company says it first “detected suspicious activity” on October 19, immediately blocking access and investigating the cause. The following day, it “confirmed that passwords associated with a limited number of accounts had been changed without authorization” – it turns out this value is currently 196 accounts, just a minuscule fraction of the entire breach, but noteworthy nonetheless.

For the most part, the breach has exposed email addresses associated with Capcom IDs. As a result, anyone with an account should stay wary of phishing emails or otherwise suspicious messages impersonating Capcom in any way. The company also confirms that no credit card information has been exposed in the security breach.

Capcom has not confirmed any compromise of CAPCOM ID account login passwords originally set by customers themselves. However, the company has confirmed that passwords were changed without authorization on 196 accounts. The passwords associated with these accounts have already been reset, and the company continues to investigate the scope of any impact resulting from this incident.

Going forward, Capcom will notify customers affected by this incident. Credit card information was not included among the affected information.

It’s fair to say that Street Fighter 6 retains the highest active player count in the traditional fighting game genre, with a steady flow of DLC characters there to keep players engaged. SteamDB charts data reveals player count spiking with each new character released, with the latest being Arjun on October 13. There’s also the new Street Fighter movie, which came out just a few days later.
