AI is now visible in almost every part of our daily lives. It shows up in search engines, smartphones, productivity apps, and even operating systems. Web browsers are no exception, and over the past year, many major browsers have rushed to add AI-powered chatbots, smart summaries, and automated suggestions. However, for users who prefer a cleaner look, Mozilla is offering a clear solution for Firefox users: an AI kill switch.

The new feature, introduced in Firefox 148, allows users to completely disable all AI-related enhancements inside the browser. If you do not want chatbot integrations, AI-generated link previews, smart tab grouping suggestions, or sidebar AI tools, you can now turn them off in just a few clicks. Simply head to Settings > AI Controls and enable the option labeled “Block AI Enhancements.” Once activated, Firefox removes AI tools and stops recommending both existing and future AI features.

AI Controls are now available in the latest Firefox update

Mozilla has also confirmed that once AI features are disabled, future updates will respect that choice. The browser will not quietly re-enable AI tools after an update. For those who prefer a middle ground, Firefox 148 also allows selective control. Users can disable cloud-based AI services while keeping useful local tools, such as on-device translation.

Beyond the AI kill switch, Firefox 148 brings several other updates. Users now have more control over telemetry and remote updates. New web platform improvements include support for Trusted Types API and Sanitizer API to help reduce security risks like cross-site scripting. There are also enhancements for screen readers handling mathematical formulas in PDFs, improved PDF performance through hardware acceleration, and expanded language translation support, including Vietnamese and Traditional Chinese.

On Windows, HDR video streaming and split view features are becoming more refined. The sidebar has also received a visual refresh and is fully customizable. For those interested, Firefox 148 is now available to download via Mozilla’s download server.
