With the launch of a new game, often comes new bugs and errors to iron out. Whether it’s the result of an influx of players bombarding the servers or just something that went unnoticed until release day, connection issues in multiplayer games can be an annoyance. If you’re looking to jump into the action of the long-awaited Space Marine sequel, here’s our guide to fixing the ‘stuck on joining server’ error on Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.

The game gets its full release on September 9th, but plenty of players have been enjoying it early as a result of pre-orders. In this time, we’ve seen reports of issues related to connecting to the game servers. If this is ruining your co-op experience, then let’s jump straight into our top fixes.

How to fix Space Marine 2 stuck on joining server error – our top solutions

This issue seems to be pretty widespread. That’s not too uncommon for a popular game to experience server problems on launch, even if we are dealing with early access for the time being. To give you the rundown, here are the best solutions we’ve found so far:

  • Disable the Steam Overlay
  • Disable Cloud Saves for the game
  • Turn off Cross Platform if you don’t need it
  • Join the server via an invite code

If you’re unsure how to perform any of these solutions, our step-by-step guides are just below. We’re going to be focusing on the Steam version of the game, though other launchers should have similar compatibility where needed.

Disable Steam Overlay

Step

1

Find Space Marine 2 in your Steam library

First of all, locate Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 in your Steam game library. You can click the ‘Library’ tab at the top of Steam and use the search function to do so.

Step

2

Open game properties and turn off Steam overlay

Right click the game in your library and select ‘Properties’

From here, you’ll find the general tab and the very first option will be ‘Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game’. You want to toggle this off.

Disable Cloud Saves

Step

1

Find Space Marine 2 on Steam

Turning off Cloud Saves is pretty much the same as the previous method. Again, find Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 in your Steam game library. The ‘Library’ tab at the top of Steam has a search function if you need it.

Step

2

Open game properties and turn off Steam Cloud

Right click the game in your library and select ‘Properties’

Go to the general tab and toggle off the ‘Steam Cloud’ setting. We’ve used Dawn of War as an example, but it’ll work the same way for Space Marine 2.

Turn off Cross-Platform

Step

1

Open the settings menu

To turn off crossplay, you’ll need to change an option within the game’s settings. This is the case no matter which platform you’re playing it on. So, boot up the game if you haven’t already.

Note: While finding this, we noticed that the ‘Crossplay’ setting was not possible to toggle while in an active game. So, return to the title screen in order to make this change possible.

Step

2

Toggle Crossplay off in game settings

Toggle off the ‘Crossplay’ setting. You can find this at the very bottom of the ‘Game’ settings tab under the ‘Network’ category. Again, make sure you’re not currently in a game lobby.

Join the server via a game invite code

Step

1

Edit Squad in-game

Jumping in game now, there are a couple of ways you can play co-op with friends in Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. We suggest using the invite code feature, as it seems the most reliable.

While aboard the battle barge, you can edit your squad settings. On PC, the default keyboard (and Xbox controller) bind for this ‘Y’, or ‘Triangle’ on a PlayStation pad.

Step

2

Open the Invite Menu and use/share the code

Now, as prompted you can open the ‘Invite Menu’ with the Enter (Return) key by default. From here, you can either join a squad with another friend’s invite code, or invite friends using your own – it’s up to you.
