The Oculus Quest 2 boasts some seriously impressive specs allowing you to play a bunch of fantastic virtual reality experiences directly on the headset itself. No PCs, no wires, just tether-free playground for you to enjoy.
However, there are questions around some tech that’s included on some VR headsets on the market and not others. The one feature we’ll be talking about here is full body tracking and if full body tracking is specifically on the Oculus Quest 2.
What is full body tracking?
Full body tracking maps out your whole person and aims to put it in the virtual reality space. Once full body tracking is in place, you should be able to move around freely and the software will pick up all of your movements and recreate them on a virtual character.
Full body tracking is especially useful in film making, for example, as you may be able to port the data across and use it as a reference point to build animations off. Additionally, it could also be similarly used in video game creation which requires both animators and visual artists to create some of the best and most realistic in-game models around.
Can you get full body tracking on Oculus Quest 2?
At this current time, you cant get full body tracking on the Oculus Quest 2. This is because the tracking method this specific headset uses is housed within the headset itself without the use of external peripherals. While this method of tracking is hugely advantageous for tetherless VR, it does, unfortunately, limit its full capabilities.
Will full body tracking come to Oculus Quest 2?
As full body tracking isn’t available on the Quest 2 right now, many have been wondering if it will ever come to the system. While there has been little word on this, there’s been a recent breakthrough that suggests that full body tracking will come to the Quest 2 in the future.
The technology already exists on other headsets such as the HTC Vive thanks to the separate sensors and there’s an understanding that this could similarly happen with the Quest 2. All it needs is those trackers to be sold as addons and you could see full body tracking coming to the Quest 2 experience sooner rather than later.
