Nvidia reportedly cuts back 16GB GPU production, shifts focus to 8GB as memory shortages cause havoc

Reports suggest Nvidia is cutting back supply of its 16GB RAM graphics cards to focus on two cheaper models – the RTX 5060 and RTX 5060 Ti 8GB. There’s also a 16GB variant of the 5060 Ti (we’ve reviewed one), but production has been affected ongoing memory shortages, which you have likely heard about by now. RAM price hikes have been affecting the market for several months, and that may turn to “several years” of disruption to gaming, according to Epic CEO Tim Sweeney.
8GB of VRAM may not be desirable for most gamers this days – in fact, a poll we ran a few months back suggested it “isn’t enough anymore,” but entry-level to mid-range cards remain massively popular. Generally speaking, the reason for that is simple: the price. Plus, Valve’s monthly Steam survey shows the majority people are still playing at 1080p.
Nvidia is focusing on 8GB graphics cards, says leak
These reports comes from Board Channels, a Chinese-language forum which is often a reliable source of insider news and leaks surrounding GPU production related to Nvidia’s (or AMD’s) board partners. According to the source, “the impact of high-priced memory chips” has made Nvidia reconsider its current RTX 50 series production. There has been a reduction in shipments of RTX 5060 Ti and RTX 5070 Ti cards, both of which have 16GB GDDR7 RAM, and focus has been shifted to the two 8GB GPUs.

We mentioned the Steam survey earlier on, and it’s interesting to note that the current most popular GPU on Steam (as of December 2025) is the RTX 3060. This is a GPU with a 12GB model, and it remains massively relevant despite the RTX 4060 and RTX 5060 coming along to succeed up, both of which feature just 8GB of VRAM. There has even been rumors of Nvidia reigniting production of the 3060 to help combat the price of newer memory modules, but this remains to be proven.
