The most popular GPU on Steam right now is the RTX 3060, and it has been for some time (although we did see the newer 4060 briefly overtake it last year). In any case, this popular budget GPU, which flaunts up to 12GB of VRAM instead of the cut-back 8GB in its two successors, may be hitting the production line again, according to a recent rumor.

Originally released in 2021, the RTX 3060 discontinuation process began in 2024. However, despite the release of the RTX 4060 and RTX 5060, Nvidia may be revisiting the 30-series model. It’s not yet obvious whether the rumor refers to the 12GB or 8GB model, or both.

RTX 3060 production may make a comeback

We may speculate that DRAM shortages and rising costs are why Nvidia may revisit the RTX 3060. The budget graphics card uses GDDR6 memory and may be less affected by price hikes than the newer GDDR7 memory used by the latest RTX 50 series GPUs. It should be noted that this doesn’t explain why there is no rumor of a 4060 comeback, as this card also fits the GDDR6 spec. In any case, this rumor comes from well-known leaker @hongxing2020, who has a solid track record.

Nvidia produced the RTX 3060 with 12GB (192-bit) and 8GB (128-bit) variants, with the latter spec being the same as the two latest xx60 tier cards. It goes without saying at this point that many gamers are asking for more VRAM, with many we’ve polled agreeing that 8GB isn’t enough anymore for modern gaming. As such, more 12GB cards on the market would be preferable, granted the price can be kept down. We’d suggest that around $200 would be appealing, well below Intel’s Arc B580 right now.
