Turning off a console is easy right? Well, knowing how to turn off a PS5 actually involves a bit more knowledge than usual.

The PlayStation 5 actually has a few different power options that make use of the system’s next-gen hardware even when powered off. So below we will take you through the different ways you can turn off your PlayStation 5, and explain what each option does so you can make the most of your console’s power-related capabilities.

Methods to turn off a PS5

1

Turn Off Manually

The first method is doing it the old fashioned way and pressing down the power button located on the console.

Step

1

Locate The Power Button

Because of the size of the PlayStation 5 it can take a little digging to find the button since it blends in really well with the sleek black design.

On both the digital and disk tray versions of the PlayStation 5 the power button is located on the black center strip running down the console, about 2 inches from the bottom.

It is a little easier to see on the digital version because it’s the only button on the front while on the disk tray equivalent it is just under the eject button.

Step

2

Press Or Hold Down

From here there are two options, if you hold down the button for at least 3 seconds it will close all apps and games and shut down the system entirely, allowing it to cool down.

If you quickly tap the power however the console will go into rest mode, a low energy saving status where the console continues downloading games, charging controllers and being accessible from the Playstation app while not being fully shut down.

Rest mode is a useful next gen feature that works great for downloading huge games but not having the PlayStation fully powered up.

2

Turn Off From Controller

Another option is turning the PlayStation off with your dual sense controller which can save you even having to leave your couch after a gaming session.

Step

1

Navigate To The Control Center

Firstly, tap the PlayStation icon on the controller under the touchpad, this will bring up the control center and can be done either on the dashboard or mid game.

You will see several icons including the friends list and downloads however you will want to scroll to the power section located at the furthest right. If the center has not been customized, this is where it will always be.

Step

2

Turn Off, Rest Or Restart

When this is pressed you will be presented with three options. Rest mode will place the console in its low energy saving state which will continue downloading and pause any ongoing games so you can jump straight back in.

The second option is shutting down the PlayStation entirely, and should always be the go to option if you plan on not using the console for an extended period. You will be met with a transition screen and the console shuts down in no time.

Finally if your PlayStation 5 is facing some technical issues like downloads stopping and starting or games not opening, it can be worth pressing restart which will shut down all apps and games and entirely reset the system.

Summary

Always make sure to turn off a PlayStation 5 when not in use, to allow the fans to cool down and the system to stay healthy.

However, trying the rest mode now and again is great for finishing those bigger downloads, or PS5 updates, and then jumping right back into where you left off.
