Why we love the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
The best gaming CPU
For its performance and cost, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D tops our list of the best CPUs for gaming – and it’s not particularly close. The 9800X3D’s 3D V-cache gives it a huge L3 cache, allowing it to store needed game data right on the chip. At less than $500, there’s simply no other CPU that can match it for helping a system deliver fast frame rates.
Generationally superior
As our 9800X3D review points out, this CPU outclasses the iconic Ryzen 7 7800X3D in every…area except cost, but we think the extra expenditure is worth it. The 9800X3D is better in productivity workloads, it’s a more efficient CPU overall, and it can even be overclocked. So it’s hands-down the best pick for gaming-focused builds and worth getting at the best possible price.

A Socket AM5 gem
For AMD, this CPU is a gem. It not only stands out as one of the best Socket AM5 processors, but it leaves the door open for future upgrades. The Ryzen 9 9950 variants are there for higher-end future options, should you want. But perhaps more importantly, the Olympic Ridge Zen 6 desktop family will be on AM5. So, if there’s a big leap in gaming performance, you won’t need to switch up your whole PC.
What to consider before you buy
We have no qualms in recommending the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. It’s an excellent pick, and for gamers, we rate it as the best option available on the market. The one thing to consider is that the processor has been a little less expensive, and if you want it at its best price, Black Friday may offer deeper savings. However, this deal is a great opportunity to get the Ryzen 7 9800X3D for less if you need it right now.
