When I was younger, I had a radio alarm clock. I liked it because waking up to music was far nicer than a blaring tone or creepy chime. As an adult, I’ve struggled to replace it, but the Philips SmartSleep Wake-up Light may be just the device. This sunrise/sunset-simulating lamp, clock…thing with FM radio built in, may be the ally my sleep routine has been begging for. It also has over 14,000 Amazon reviews and a 4.3 out of 5-star rating. Two-thirds of reviews give it five stars.
Natural sounds and an FM Radio
There’s no chime or siren to wake you up here, since the Wake-up Light offers five ‘natural’ wake-up sounds to choose from. Or, if you want to wake up to music, like I used to and probably still do, the built-in FM Radio can be your waking sound, along with the simulated sunrise that Philips says can make waking up easier and you more energized.

A reading lamp, not just an alarm clock
While helping you wake up and drift to sleep is the core function of the Wake-up Light, the device can also be used as a reading lamp. The device has 20 brightness settings, so you can choose the one that suits your room and needs, with a maximum brightness of 300 lux.
What to consider before you buy
As an alarm clock device, the SmartSleep Wake-up light focuses on supporting your sleep and wake routine, with an added FM radio a standalone audio feature. You cannot stream music to the device or use it as a Bluetooth speaker, and the Wake-up Light has no 3.5mm jack on the body. If you’re looking for a Bluetooth-connected alarm clock, or something you can play your own music on, this won’t be the device for you. However, if, like me, you’re intrigued by the potential benefits, now is the best price the Wake-up Light has ever had.
