The 2024 Microsoft Surface Laptop was the first to really match the MacBook Air at it’s own game, and is so good, I picked one up myself (and it’s still going strong)! This 13.8-inch Surface Laptop combines excellent industrial design, a bright 3:2 touchscreen and impressive battery efficiency with Qualcomm’s 10-core Snapdragon X Plus processor. Its 16GB of memory and 512GB SSD suit everyday professional and academic work, while the 45-TOPS neural processor supports Microsoft’s expanding Copilot+ feature set. Grab it now and save hundreds off the MSRP!

What we like about the 13.8-inch Microsoft Surface Laptop (2024)

Excellent PixelSense Flow display

The 13.8-inch touchscreen has a 2304×1536 resolution and a productivity-friendly 3:2 aspect ratio. Its taller shape displays more lines of a document, webpage or spreadsheet than a conventional 16:9 screen of similar diagonal size. At approximately 201 pixels per inch, text and interface elements appear sharp without requiring an excessively demanding native resolution. A dynamic refresh rate of up to 120Hz makes scrolling, window movement and touch interaction visibly smoother than on a 60Hz display. Windows can reduce the refresh rate when appropriate to conserve energy. The panel also supports 10-point multitouch, adaptive colour and HDR content.

Microsoft specifies brightness of up to 600 nits, although HDR and real-world measurements can depend on mode and content. This is enough for a bright indoor environment and outdoor use. The glossy finish produces vivid-looking images but can reflect windows and overhead lighting, making positioning important in very bright rooms.

Touch support is useful for scrolling, signing documents and direct interface interaction. The Surface Laptop does not convert into a tablet and its hinge is not designed to fold completely backwards, so touch is supplementary rather than the machine’s primary control method.

Strong battery efficiency

Microsoft advertises up to 20 hours of local video playback for the Snapdragon X Plus configuration. That result comes from controlled playback testing at reduced brightness and should not be treated as 20 hours of mixed professional use. Microsoft’s separate active web-use estimates are lower, and demanding workloads, video calls, maximum brightness and translated x64 applications can shorten endurance further. Even with those qualifications, the Surface Laptop’s 54Wh-class battery and efficient Arm processor make it one of the more convincing Windows options for mobile work.

The supplied 39W Surface power adapter is adequate for routine charging. Faster charging from approximately 5% to 80% requires a compatible 65W Surface or USB-C Power Delivery charger, sold separately. Both USB-C and Surface Connect can be used for power.

Premium portable construction

The aluminium chassis measures approximately 11.85×8.67×0.69 inches and weighs about three pounds. It is light enough for regular travel while providing a more substantial screen than many 13-inch ultraportables. Dune is a muted metallic colour rather than an aggressively bright finish, giving the laptop a distinctive but professional appearance. The unibody construction feels more premium than the mixed-material designs used by many midrange notebooks.

Comfortable keyboard and haptic touchpad

The backlit keyboard uses a conventional laptop layout and includes a dedicated Copilot key. Surface keyboards are generally designed around relatively quiet travel and a firm deck, making this model suitable for extended document work. Its Precision Haptic touchpad generates simulated clicks rather than relying solely on a hinged mechanical mechanism. This allows a consistent click response across a larger portion of its surface and supports configurable Windows gestures.

The 1080p front camera, Windows Hello facial recognition, dual Studio microphones and Omnisonic speakers make the device well equipped for calls. Dolby Atmos processing can broaden perceived sound, though the integrated speakers cannot replace headphones or dedicated external audio.

Sufficient everyday memory and storage

Sixteen gigabytes of LPDDR5X memory is appropriate for office work, extensive browser use, communication and moderate creative tasks. The memory is integrated into the system and cannot be upgraded after purchase, despite Amazon’s misleading references to memory slots. Users running virtual machines, very large development environments or professional media software may benefit from a 32GB configuration. Because this particular unit is fixed at 16GB, prospective buyers should consider their long-term needs before ordering.

The 512GB SSD offers a reasonable balance between capacity and cost. Usable space is lower after Windows, recovery data and applications, but cloud storage and external USB4 drives can supplement it. The removable internal SSD is a small M.2 device rather than a standard full-length desktop module.

Useful modern connectivity

The laptop provides two USB-C/USB4 ports, one full-size USB-A port, a 3.5mm headset connection and Microsoft’s magnetic Surface Connect port. USB4 supports fast storage, docking and compatible external displays, while USB-A avoids the immediate need for adapters with older accessories. There is no built-in HDMI port or SD card reader. Connecting a conventional monitor, projector or memory card therefore requires an appropriate USB-C adapter or dock.

Official specifications identify Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, subject to regional availability and compatible network equipment. Amazon’s tables variously list Wi-Fi 6E, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.2 and basic 802.11b/g/n, so those retailer fields are internally inconsistent. Microsoft’s specification should take precedence for this model.

Who should consider this Microsoft Surface Laptop deal?

The Surface Laptop is best suited to students, writers, office professionals and travellers who prioritize display quality, quiet operation and long battery life. It works particularly well for users whose workflow centres on Microsoft 365, web applications, mainstream communication tools and other software with native Arm64 versions. It is also appropriate for buyers interested in local Windows AI features. The 45-TOPS NPU meets Copilot+ requirements and can process supported effects more efficiently than using the CPU alone. The usefulness of individual features remains dependent on software updates, language and region.

It is less suitable for serious gaming, GPU-intensive 3D work or buyers requiring a dedicated graphics processor. Developers and technical professionals should confirm that their compilers, containers, virtual machines and device drivers support Windows on Arm.
