Samsung is a reliable choice for a gaming monitor, from affordable to outright premium. And at the lower-cost end of the spectrum, we love the 27-inch Odyssey G5 (G51F). It’s an affordable 1440p model and can regularly be found under $220. Less regular is its best price, available right now at Amazon. A limited-time deal drops the G51F back to $150, for a $70 saving. For a starter 2K monitor that’s a top price, and quality and comfort are key elements.

Why we like the Odyssey G5 (G51F) gaming monitor

Rapid and responsive

The 180Hz refresh rate of the G51F is typical of entry-level 1440p monitors. But unless you’re regularly beyond 150 frames per second, it should be plenty fast enough. It’s a refresh rate that can cover most mid-range gaming PCs in modern titles, and with a 1ms response time, there’s no question it can support fast action.

Detail and depth

A 27-inch monitor is ideal for day-to-day 1440p viewing and gaming. And if you’re upgrading from a Full HD or smaller model, you’ll notice the difference in quality immediately. The Odyssey G5 (G51F) is an HDR10 monitor supporting enhanced brightness and tone in HDR content for vivid visuals.

Ergonomic design

It’s still possible to find more affordable monitors without adjustability. But the G51F definitely isn’t one. This monitor is replete with tilt, pivot, and height adjustment. And thanks to its pivot adjustment, you could also use it as a vertical second screen if needed.

What to consider before you buy

At the deal price of $150, there’s not much to say in caution about this monitor. For a first 1440p model, it should be a very good buy. The only real consideration is the power of your gaming PC. If it can output around 150+ frames per second at 1440p, you may want to consider buying a more expensive monitor with a higher refresh rate for longevity. Equally important is considering whether you may want to game in 4K. If you do want more options, check out our best gaming monitors guide for a variety of models.
