There’s a long way down for SSD costs, but this 4TB SATA III model is at its best price this year
Table of Contents
We can’t pretend that SSD prices are anywhere near where users need them to be. The 2026 price hikes, driven by the (AI) demand for memory chips, have been painful. What we can do is highlight the improvements. Thankfully, we’ve seen one for the Silicon Power SP 4TB SSD. This is a SATA III drive, not an NVME, but it’s now back to its best price since the start of the year, undoing some of the spikes of the last few months. Now $306, it’s fallen around $40 at Amazon.

A boost of space
If you’re looking at a 4TB SATA III SSD, maybe you’ve filled your NVMe drives, or…you don’t have any on your motherboard. Either way, 4TB is a sizable capacity for regular file needs, or even games. 4TB could probably store around 20-30x the size of Call of Duty Black Ops 7 (depending on add-ons). And it will be a big upgrade on most laptop drives, too.
SATA III speed
It’s easy to get lost in the world of read and write MB/s speak. But the SATA III spec is more than fast enough for storing modern games on, and for general day-to-day tasks. While slower than NVMe drives, the real-world difference may be one or two seconds loading in. If you’re a professional or content creator, SATA III probably isn’t ideal unless you’re maxing out storage.

Relative value
This deal still doesn’t offer the kind of value we saw in 2025 for SATA III SSDs. But the SP Silicon Power 4TB SSD (A55) is the best-value 4TB SSD of this spec that we can see at the time of writing. That doesn’t mean the price is otherworldly in a good way, but it does put this drive in a better position than a lot of its peers.
What to consider before you buy
SSD pricing is the main thing to consider, given where we are and the trajectory of the graph above. While the SP Silicon Power 4TB SSD (A55) won’t win any speed awards and certainly isn’t one of the best SSDs for gaming, it can provide expanded storage and dependable speeds at a price lower than in the last seven months. For PC, laptop, or other needs, it’s good to see this SSD’s prices dip, even if there’s much further to go.
