AMD Ryzen™ 9 9900X 12-Core, 24-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor

What you need to know about the AMD Ryzen 9 9900X

The Ryzen 9 9900X followed up from the 7900X, and was released back in August, 2024. It’s built on the Zen 5 architecture, and boasts 12 cores, 24 threads, a boost clock of 5.6GHz, and an L3 Cache of 64MB.

At the time of release it received some mixed reviews, but ultimately positive. When we tested this CPU, we noted its good single core and multi-core performance, but found that it was almost held back by its efficiency. It has a TDP of 120W, which is relatively low compared to some other higher-end options. While that may be great for some builds, you may want to lean towards the X3D options if you’re looking for something more punchy.

This CPU is designed to work with AM5 builds, making it a good option for those looking to take advantage of the latest technology, such as PCIe 5.0 and DDR5 RAM. You’ll need a compatible AM5 motherboard if you get this though, so it’s good if you’re looking for a bit of refresh of your current setup.

Overall, when this was released, we thought it was a bit pricey given some of the alternatives and what they offer. With this deal though, it does bring it down to a level which makes it far more appealing. In fact, according to camelcamelcamel, it’s not too far away from its lowest price ever, which was $368.56 on March 30th 2025, making it a decent time to pull the trigger if you’re interested.
