AMD has rolled out a technical preview of AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2 (better known as AFMF 2), which is a frame generation technology designed to boost frame rates. As per the official announcement, the Technical Preview release driver is available on laptops powered by the newly-released AMD Ryzen AI 300 series processors as well as handhelds like Lenovo Legion Go. Here’s what supports AFMF 2 so far:
- Ryzen 6000/7000 CPUs with integrated 700M graphics (Z1 and Z1 Extreme handheld chips included)
- Radeon RX 6000/7000 series GPUs
- Ryzen AI 300 series CPUs
Along with AFMF 2, AMD has also introduced Variable Graphics Memory (VGI), which enables users to convert their system RAM into “dedicated” graphics memory (VRAM). As some games have fixed VRAM requirements, VGM allows you to run those games on AMD Ryzen AI 300 series PCs. Further, Variable Graphics Memory can also boost framerates in games that are not too demanding on RAM.
AMD posts some AFMF 2 benchmarks
In the official post, AMD mentioned that they were able to run Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy on AMD Ryzen AI 300 series PCs with VGM, fulfilling the minimum VRAM requirements. This is a big win for any laptop gamers getting by on integrated graphics (if you’re running one of the supported chips of course).
Further, with AFMF 2 and VGM turned on, the AI 300 series PC was able to achieve 106 FPS on F1 23, 105 FPS on Far Cry 6, and 91 FPS on Horizon Zero Dawn at 1080p high preset. Also, on a 1080p low preset, the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 processor was able to deliver 100 FPS for Cyberpunk 2077, which is 78% higher than the FPS you’d get without AFMF.
To get the best experience on mobility platforms like the Ryzen AI 300 series PCs, the company recommends adjusting the game settings before activating the frame generation technology. “AMD recommends first tuning the game settings to be able to maintain an FPS of 50 (1080p) before turning on AFMF 2,” AMD wrote in the post.
AMD also suggests that game graphics settings should not be too low before activating the AFMF 2, as doing so may result in choppy graphics. At the moment, the Technical Preview of AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2 can be downloaded from AMD’s official website. The announcement also mentions that AFMF 2 will soon be available on the mainline release of AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
