It’s no secret that AMD has been dominating the gaming market in the CPU sector. It’s even making some decent gains in the GPU market, in part thanks to the RX 9070 XT launch becoming the best in Radeon history. On top of that, Team Red knows that it is ahead of the competition, and a lot of that success comes down to the invention of X3D.

Ryzen X3D processors feature unique stacked V-Cache to aid gaming performance. AMD CEO Lisa Su has discussed the origins of the technology in a recent interview with the General Manager of ASUS China, Tony Yu. You may be surprised to hear it had its start in servers, not gaming PCs, but the “very creative” engineers at AMD soon realized its potential.

AMD CEO says X3D powers the best gaming PCs today

Looking at the current generation of X3D processors from AMD, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is a highly popular choice. We rated it top marks in our review for good reason, as it delivers excellent gaming performance, and it is the first X3D CPU to allow overclocking. It has since been followed by the Ryzen 9 9950X3D and 9900X3D, which offer improved productivity performance, making them ideal for creators, streamers, game developers, etc.

“Our team was very innovative and said: how can we really bring gaming PCs to the next level? Today, this is our third generation of X3D and the performance is just fantastic. Every generation it’s gotten better because we learned something about the technology. And now, I’m very happy to say that [the] best gaming PCs in the world are built with our X3D technology.”

Dr Lisa Su, AMD CEO

“Our engineers are very creative. They’re always thinking about how to push the envelope on technology. Our original X3D was actually made for server, data center applications,” says Su, as she explains the origin of X3D processors. While she was initially unsure of the technology due to its complexity, the results spoke for themselves. This was soon brought to the desktop environment for gaming PCs, and the rest is history.

Rival Intel fails to offer an alternative to X3D technology, and it has certainly fallen behind in the DIY CPU market as a result. AMD Ryzen has continued to dominate sales charts throughout 2025, and we don’t see that changing anytime soon. On top of that, Team Red has already said it is ramping up production of X3D in response to the massive demand.
