AMD could be working on an RX 9000 series GPU to rival the RTX 5090’s 32GB VRAM

We’re drawing ever closer to the release of the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT, the first two Radeon GPUs in the RX 9000 series. These are locked in for early March – as confirmed by AMD CEO Lisa Su – while a recent release date rumor suggests they’ll launch on March 6th.
From what we know so far, both cards will likely feature 16GB of VRAM, but a new rumor now suggests that AMD is planning to launch a 32GB model. This would help Team Red rival Nvidia’s flagship RTX 5090, the only consumer 32GB card on the market for gaming right now.
AMD could be gearing up to launch a 32GB graphics card
According to a discussion on Chiphell forums, well-known leaker zhangzhonghao reveals that AMD could be planning a 32GB graphics card for release this year. AMD has yet to announce the specifications of the RX 9070 series GPUs – we’ve instead had to rely on leaks and early retailer listings. The cards have seemingly been ready to go for a while now, but AMD is taking “a little extra time” to fine-tune the software stack.

Based on this information, the 32GB card will not be a ‘Pro’ edition card for workstations. Instead, the leaker claims that it will be a gaming card within the RX 9070 series. Logically, it would make the most sense for this to be a 32GB edition of the RX 9070 XT, and this has supposedly been “confirmed” by the user. They say that it will be “mainly for AI” with a higher price tag, and due for release at the end of Q2 (assumedly this year). As always, this information should be taken with a pinch of salt until AMD officially announces the series and its SKUs.

If you’re questioning why a 9070 series card needs 32GB of VRAM, it will unlock more use cases outside of gaming. Specifically, better support for Large Language Models (LLM) for AI workloads. So, while it more than likely won’t be able to take on the RTX 5090 as far as raw performance goes, it will help compete with it by running LLMs at a fraction of the price.
