AMD reveals which brands it is partnering with for upcoming AI PCs
Microsoft has been consistent in its desire to push AI technology, as seen with its ‘Copilot+' AI-powered Microsoft Surface PCs that were announced in 2024. These Surface laptops have been powered by Intel Core ultra chips, but that might be about to change.
A recent post on Twitter/X has provoked a great deal of speculation on the future that AMD might have with companies such as Microsoft and Lenovo. The post by AMD CEO Dr Lisa Su spoke of an ‘Advancing AI' event that took place in Beijing.
Su said in the post: “Great week with customers and partners at our Advancing AI event in Beijing demonstrating AI PCs in action and visiting our AMD teams in China.” The accompanying photos revealed some new names alongside established AMD partnerships like MSI and ASUS. Two of the most prominent were Lenovo and Microsoft.
Intel and Nvidia have had difficulties in recent months. Intel suffered serious issues with its Raptor Lake CPUs and still doesn't have anything that can match up to AMD's X3D processors in terms of gaming performance. Meanwhile, Team Green has lost ground to AMD during this generation of graphics cards, thanks to the troubled launch of the RTX 50 series offering up a golden opportunity for the AMD Radeon RX 9070 series.
With this in mind, it makes sense that companies such as Microsoft are working with AMD when it comes to making new hardware. Though Microsoft Surface laptops have largely been focused on business use, if the aim is to expand into other markets such as gaming, then AMD is the logical choice.
No firm details have been released on what specific products AMD is working on with Microsoft, but we can expect that AI-focused PCS will be top of the list. AMD will also be working with the likes of HP, which recently shared its interest in developing a SteamOS handheld, a market in which Team Red is very much involved.
