AMD Ryzen 7 9700X will keep its low TDP despite rumors as release date is also announced

At Computex in June, AMD unveiled the latest Ryzen 9000 series CPUs along with the specs for each processor. One of the CPUs revealed at the Computex was the Ryzen 7 9700X, which can be considered as the ‘mid-point' of the entire upcoming series. It’s the cheapest 8-core CPU in the series and follows in the footsteps of the 7700X we reviewed.
A few weeks ago, there was speculation that AMD was considering upping the processor's thermal design power (TDP) from 65W to 120W. Now, the AMD Ryzen 9000 series has a release date along with confirmation of the Ryzen 7 9700X's TDP, which remains unchanged from the original plans announced back at Computex.

Ryzen 7 9700X keeps the 65W TDP as planned
As per the initial announcement, the Ryzen 7 9700X was supposed to have a TDP of 65W. However, according to some rumors, AMD, the manufacturer, was reconsidering this spec in favor of a higher 120W. This would've put the 8-core chip on the same level as the higher-end 9900X in terms of TDP – but not performance.
One of the main reasons for this speculated last-minute change was that a higher TDP would help the 9700X outperform the Ryzen 7800X3D. Furthermore, more power consumption would allow for more overclocking and help improve clock speeds.
However, these rumors have been shut down with the latest announcement from AMD (as well as advertisements from several retailers). The 9700X, along with the 9600X, will have a TDP of 65W, which makes both Zen5 CPUs suitable for lower-end builds. What makes these options attractive is that users can benefit from 8-core performance without the high power consumption.
Meanwhile, the 9900X and the 9950X have a TDP of 120W and 170, respectively – and they're more suited to power users. In fact, the Ryzen 9 9950X has already broken several records with its overclocking demo and boasts an incredible level of performance when compared to last-gen or rival Intel’s 14th-gen processors.
Ryzen 9000 series to launch on July 31st
Along with the specs of each CPU, AMD also confirmed that the new range of processors will be available from July 31st, which is about two weeks away. At the launch, we will see four CPUs – the 9600X, the 9700X, the 9900X, and the 9950X rolling out.
While we have a release date and specs, AMD has refrained from revealing the prices of any upcoming CPUs. Despite that, some retailers are already listing the new SKUs, leaking price & availability in some regions. You can keep track of where to buy Ryzen 9000 series CPUs in our dedicated guide.
