AMD’s XOC team (Extreme Overclocking) held a live demo recently to showcase the overclocking capabilities and resulting performance of the new Ryzen 9 9950X processor. During the event, the team managed to hit a 55K score in Cinebench – enough to break HWBOT world rankings.

Gamer Nexus was one of the lucky few to see the event live, and in a video posted today, the AMD XOC (extreme overclocking) team put the soon-to-be-released flagship through extensive overclocking scenarios to beat the current Cinebench R23 & R16 16-core world records.

AMD launches latest Ryzen 9 9950X3D & 9900X3D CPUs!

To achieve the impressive Cinebench scores being boasted, the team had to overclock the Ryzen 9 9950X to 6.6GHz – consuming around 552W of power. As you can imagine, liquid nitrogen was required by the XOC team to hit the dizzy clock speed heights seen in Gamer Nexus’ video – with CPU temps falling to around minus 90 degrees Celsius (pot temperature).

To achieve this, the overclocking enthusiasts made use of an ASUS X670E ROG Crosshair Gene motherboard – a custom-designed board that is used heavily by extreme overclockers. Alongside this, two DDR5 DIMMs were used alongside AMD Ryzen Master and a custom AMD app made by ASUS.

The team behind the flagship CPU overclocking managed to hit a Cinebench score of 55296 – around a 31% increase over the stock settings (41924). The Cinebench scores would have seen the flagship CPU top the HWBOT rankings if they had been published. The Ryzen 9 9950X is currently listed on Cinebench R23 at seventh position – well behind several of the competing Intel 13th-gen and 14th-gen flagships. That said, the clock speeds published for the 9950X in that particular run were between 4.3-5.7GHz – well behind that of the 6.6GHz posted during AMD’s live event.

How does the Ryzen 9 9950x compare to older generations?

It might not all be swings, roundabouts, and liquid nitrogen world records for the upcoming Zen 5 flagship though – as some enthusiasts are already pointing out the relatively lackluster uplift in stock performance when compared to last-gen’s lineup.

When comparing the Ryzen 9 9950X at stock, it seemingly only offers a 5% uplift in performance when compared to the brand’s last-gen 7950X flagship – which scored 36517 in the same Cinebench R23 tests.

Several tweets have also pointed out that the Ryzen 9 9950X sees a large uplift in PPT (Package power tracking), up to 1000W. By comparison, the 7950X sits at around 230W.

All being said, its an impressive feat from the AMD XOC team, and one that should be official when the product officially launches. That said, it’ll be interesting to see how these latest figures impact potential sales, with lots of noise on X seemingly disappointed by the generational uplift.
