AMD stock surges following new OpenAI collaboration, but it’s not as big as last month’s Nvidia deal

OpenAI has announced yet another partnership; this time with AMD. Team Red plans to deploy “6 Gigawatts of AMD GPUs” for the ChatGPT creators, with the first gigawatt (GW) set to feature AMD Instinct MI450 Series GPUs in the second half of 2026. Immediately following the announcement, AMD stock has unsurprisingly surged.

Likewise, it hasn’t been long since OpenAI and Nvidia joined forces for AI development, with a massive $100 billion partnership dedicated to building data centers with Nvidia hardware, announced on September 22. AMD’s rivals are eyeing at least 10 GW of power for AI systems, which is about the equivalent of New York City – that’s with a population of around 8.5 million people.

We should note that the deal with Nvidia was not exclusive in any way, giving the ChatGPT creators (OpenAI) free rein to partner with AMD, too. A side effect of this AMD x OpenAI deal is the latter taking a 10% stake in the company.

AMD and OpenAI’s “strategic partnership” is a “win-win” situation

Announced earlier today (October 6) at 7 AM EDT, a blog post details all you need to know about the deal. The multi-year collaboration sees OpenAI obtain a warrant for “up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock” (around 10%) and is expected to net AMD “tens of billions of dollars” in revenue while accelerating OpenAI’s infrastructure. The announcement comes a month ahead of AMD’s Q3 2025 financial results, which will be reported on November 4th.

“We are thrilled to partner with OpenAI to deliver AI compute at massive scale. This partnership brings the best of AMD and OpenAI together to create a true win-win enabling the world's most ambitious AI buildout and advancing the entire AI ecosystem.”

CNBC reports that AMD stock surged by more than 35% following the big announcement. @9550pro on X captured the moment pre-market sales spiked (see below).

OpenAI’s deal with Nvidia placed the GPU and AI giant as a ‘preferred partner’ for computer hardware, but that doesn’t mean AMD can’t join the party. Nvidia’s aim to build 10 gigawatts of AI systems surpasses AMD’s 6 GW plan. Nvidia will also be building GPUs for its next-gen Vera Rubin architecture to go live in the second half of 2026 as it aims to further extend its dominance in the AI sector, but AMD doesn’t seem so far behind anymore.
