As per some of the latest reports, AMD is planning to discontinue the Radeon RX 6600 series of graphics cards. The company has no plans to extend the lifecycle of the GPU lineup, at least not in China.
According to a post on IT Home, Bobantang revealed earlier this week that AMD Radeon RX 6600 models have been discontinued, and they will soon go off the shelves. In fact, IT Home reported that only a few models were available for purchase on JD.com.
In China, AMD has the following plans for the RX 6600 GPUs (as reported by Bobantang) –
- The RX 6600 series has been discontinued by AMD. The production has been stopped, so these GPUs will be available until the stock lasts.
- Further, the RX 6500XT series will become the main graphics card for all associated brands, and it will be sold at least until the end of the year. The post did not mention whether this card will be available next year or not.
- More emphasis will be put on the RX 6750GRE series, especially the 10GB model, which will be the mainstream model for all brands. Considering that the GRE (Golden Rabbit Edition) GPUs are specially made for the Chinese market, it makes sense.
Considering that AMD is gearing up for the 8000 series, which will be the next mainstream GPUs from the company, it makes sense that some of the older models have reached their EOL. As per the online speculations, the RX 8000 GPUs will be launched in 2025, so it is possible that this move is just another step in the preparation of that release.
Further, earlier this week, we reported that AMD was rumored to be working on new RDNA 3 GPUs. As per that report, the company was planning to make two new graphics cards – RX 7400 and RX 7300. According to the rumored specs, both GPUs will be based on the Navi 33 die, will have about 2,048 stream processors, and 8GB or less VRAM – as we’d expect from entry-level GPUs.
In any case, users who were planning to get their hands on these RDNA GPUs would be better off with some other similar models, like the RX 7600 or any of the RX 6700 models.
